The Donegal Shield competition was started by Maire O'Donnell to promote social interaction between golfers in Donegal clubs.  It was an opportunity for lady golfers from every club in Donegal to come together on one day to represent their respective clubs. Maire gave great support & encouragement to newcomers to the game both at Donegal Golf club and many neighbouring clubs.  She gave lessons to beginners, many of whom were heard humming "The Blue Danube" in an attempt to get the right rhythm of the swing.  Her own many accomplishments in the game included playing at Interprovincial level for Connaught, Connaught Champion in 1976, playing for Ireland, Captain of the Irish Ladies' Team and Captain of the Curtis Cup Team.
